"Heavenly Outlook: The Perspective of Medieval Sacred Art"
11:00 am, St. John Cantius Auditorium
Synopsis: Medieval art is often considered primitive or unrealistic for its presentation of time, space and light that is very different from that of modern science, and from that of most postmedieval art. Artist Daniel Mitsui argues rather that the perspective of medieval art is deliberate, truthful, and appropriate for its sacred purpose. He discusses the manner in which medieval artists saw and depicted sacred symbols in the Old Testament, in mathematics and in the natural world.
