On November 4, the Catholic Art Guild will host its second annual conference with leading artists, architects & theologians, to rediscover the power of Beauty in the modern world.
​
The conference, entitled "Formed in Beauty", will feature Alexander Stoddart, Sculptor in Ordinary for Her Majesty the Queen in Scotland, Ethan Anthony, principal architect for Cram & Ferguson, Dr. Peter Kwasniewski, Thomistic theologian, liturgical scholar, and choral composer, and Juliette Aristides, Classical Realist Artist, Author & Founder of Aristides Atelier.

The conference will open with an Orchestral Latin Mass in the baroque splendor of Chicago’s historic St. John Cantius Church, a community well known for bringing beauty into Christian worship. in the baroque splendor of Chicago’s historic St. John Cantius Church. Conference presentations and discussions will take place at The Drake Hotel, followed by an elegant banquet and culminating in a stimulating panel discussion.

Keynote Speaker
Alexander Stoddart
Sculptor in Ordinary to Her Majesty the Queen in Scotland
I was born in Edinburgh in 1959, son of a graphic designer and a schoolteacher, and was a grandson of the Baptist manse. My childhood was spent in the village of Elderslie in Renfrewshire, in a house near the small monument to the national hero of the Scots, Sir William Wallace, Guardian of Scotland. The presence of this fane in my early days had a profound effect on my later life and career as a monumentalist.
​
I was educated in Paisley and then went to Glasgow School of Art in 1976 at a time when it was most unlikely that any student would attempt any form of traditionalism. This meant that I managed to slip through to attempt work in the old styles, as the guard was down. In those days GSA was incredibly slipshod and liberal. Read more

Ethan Anthony
Principal Architect, Cram & Ferguson
​
Ethan Anthony has been Principal Architect and President at Cram and Ferguson Architects since he joined the firm in 1991. Anthony brought to the firm his early introduction to religious architecture through the Jesuits at Xavier High School in Concord, MA and his own reading on religious symbolism and architecture. Recent notable works include Shrine of Our Lady of Good Voyage, Boston MA, and St. Kateri Tekakwitha Parish, Ridgway IL. An avid researcher of the firm predecessor’s work, Anthony authored “The Architecture of Ralph Adams Cram and His Office”, published in 2007. Mr. Anthony earned his Bachelor of Architecture at the University of Oregon and is President of the Central MA AIA.
Since joining Cram and Ferguson, Anthony has turned his attention and the firm’s entirely to its original strength, the design and construction of traditional religious architecture and the design of religious interiors. Anthony began this work in earnest with the study first of the firm archives representing 120 years of leadership of religious architecture and then with six years of intensive study of religious monuments across Europe, a study he continues to this day with annual trips to Europe.
In 2017, Ethan Anthony received three awards through Central MA AIA for unbuilt and built religious institutions. In 2015, Anthony received the Award for Design Excellence through the AIA for the Casady School Chapel. In 1993, Anthony was given the IFRAA Honor Award for Unbuilt Architecture and in 2004 he received the Golden Trowel Award from the Texas Masonry Institute for Our Lady of Walsingham.
During the last three decades, Anthony has designed numerous new traditional churches and interiors and has gained a national reputation for his work in liturgical architecture. His liturgical work can now befound in fifteen states.
​Dr. Peter Kwasniewski
Thomistic Theologian, Liturgical Scholar, & Choral Composer
Dr. Peter Kwasniewski: Thomistic theologian, liturgical scholar, and choral composer, is a graduate of Thomas Aquinas College and The Catholic University of America. He has taught at the International Theological Institute in Austria, the Franciscan University of Steubenville’s Austria Program, and Wyoming Catholic College, which he helped establish in 2006. He writes regularly for The New Liturgical Movement, OnePeterFive, Rorate Caeli, and LifeSite News, and has authored six books, the most recent being Noble Beauty, Transcendent Holiness: Why the Modern Age Needs the Mass of Ages (Angelico, 2017).

Juliette Aristides
Classical Realist Artist, Author, & Founder of Aristides Atelier
​
Juliette Aristides is a Seattle based painter who seeks to understand and convey the human spirit through art. Actively dedicated to rebuilding a traditional arts education in the United States, Aristides is the founder and instructor of the Aristides Atelier at the Gage Academy of Fine Art in Seattle, WA. She teaches workshops both nationally and internationally. Author of The Classical Drawing Atelier, The Classical Painting Atelier, Lessons in Classical Drawing, and Lessons in Classical Painting with Watson-Guptill, NY, she is also a frequent contributor to various arts publications. Aristides exhibits in one person and group shows nationally and her work has been featured in Gulf Connoisseur Magazine, Artists and Illustrators UK, Artist’s Magazine, American Arts Quarterly, Fine Art Connoisseur, American Art Collector and American Artist. Aristides had her first solo museum exhibition, Observations, August 2013 in Reading, PA and the upcoming show: Atelier: Painting and Process at the Maryhill Museum,Goldendale WA featuring the work of Aristides and her students.

Tickets will not be available at the door or on the day of the event.
Please be vigilant when purchasing tickets to select the correct tickets depending on your status as a Catholic Art Guild member or non-member. We will be verifying ticket purchases for enrolled members.

If you would like to enroll as a member, you can do so by completing our membership form.

Since the event will change venues after the Mass, we will provide bus transportation to the Drake Hotel from St. John Cantius. If you would like to use the bus service, please be sure select that ticket option in addition to your conference ticket.
Please note, buses will not return to St. John Cantius after the event ends.

Tickets are for the full day event, partial tickets for either the presentations or just the dinner are not available.

Dinner at the Drake
​
Dinner at the Drake hotel will include a three-course dinner with table-side wine service (soup and dessert included). A question & answer panel discussion will follow dinner for approximately 30 minutes.
​
If you would like a vegetarian dinner or have any special dietary needs, please email us at info@catholicartguild.org after you purchase your ticket and we will notify the kitchen.
The evening will end at the Drake. Trolleys will not return to St. John Cantius so please plan accordingly.

Mozart's Requiem Nov 2nd
​
The annual Mozart Requiem Mass for the Feast of All Souls takes place on Friday Nov. 2, 2018 at St. John Cantius. If you're interested in coming into town for the weekend and arriving on Friday , the Requiem Mass begins at 7:30pm and is free of charge. Seating is limited so arrive early.

Juliette Aristides Drawing Demo November 3rd
​
On Saturday Nov. 3rd, Master Artist Juliette Aristides will present a two and half hour demonstration in classical figure drawing techniques. This powerful skill building approach to drawing is based upon on the nineteenth-century model of teaching artists by pairing them with a master artist. Observing the master artist demonstrate techniques is a critical part of learning in this method.
​
Juliette will draw from a live, clothed model, lecturing on the critical steps to this classical approach which include: the critical beginning process, blocking in shapes, measuring, adjusting your initial block-in, shading techniques, judging tones from darkest to highlights, common mistakes to avoid, a discussion of materials, and opportunity for attendees to ask questions.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?
​
Saint John Cantius Church is located at the triple intersection of Chicago, Milwaukee, and Ogden Avenue. The 24-hour CTA “Chicago” Blue Line subway stop is only a block away. Bus 56 on Milwaukee Ave, and Bus 66 on Chicago Ave stop nearby.
There is limited street parking and lot space available at St. John Cantius.

Valet parking is available on site at the Drake Hotel. Nearby garage parking is also available, check online for rates and options.
